The preparations took us to a flea market where we found the skull (animal still unknown), we spray painted all our swimming gear from last year´s beach shoot black, booked a German Shepherd dog as a model and Kristel, our photographer, made me study this article about building perfect sandcastles.

We even had calculated the exact time when the shoot had to take place, so that it wouldn´t be too bright or too dark, just the perfect Nordic summer sunset. Despite the masses of mosquitoes, the shoot was a success and we couldn´t wait to see the results.

Looking back it seems like the black magic spell from the shoot stayed upon us. I received a phone call from Kristel a couple of days later saying that her computer had crashed and she couldn´t recover the high-res images. All we could retrieve were the tiny icons. The collage of these can be seen on our Gallery page.

But luckily we had Triin filming the whole thing and have now got a great behind the scenes movie that gives a nice overview of the nature of our “ghost” shoot.

I want to send my apologies to our whole team involved in the shoot. Merlin, Sille, Kirki, Britta, Triin, Evelin, Joosep, Joonathan, the Dog – you were wicked! I know that you could have spent the evening fighting the annoying mosquitoes somewhere else but you were there and you were amazing. Thanks for your help! We promise that we are already backing up all our images the minute they are being taken.

In the big city we found the gorgeous Eva Kass to be our model. As Kass means Cat in Estonian, our logo is a cat and Japanese really seem to love cats, at some point we just couldn´t resist ditching the dolphin and painting her a cat face. This is when she immediately became the centre of attention and people took pictures with whatever they had in their hand. Apparently the main comment was, “She has such a tiny face!” Who knew it could be a compliment…

Below is a short behind the scenes clip I took when Eva and photographer Soichiro tried to make the most of the green light. Hope it gives an idea how loud and busy the streets really were.

My fascination with fishnet is not a new thing. I produced the first samples about 4 years ago. But then I failed to find the right fabric for manufacturing and started postponing the process. Finding a good looking fishnet is a difficult task. The fabric has received a tacky reputation and therefore most of the sample materials I saw were exactly that.

After uncountable phone calls to manufacturers, I accidentally found the perfect fishnet from the place I wouldn´t have even thought looking for – our lace manufacturer in France (yes, that´s how posh it is!). The perfect soft touch, right hole size and high quality. Adding a satin bow and our signature cat logo button, the final concept was born.

From the

start I wanted to create pieces that were great for layering. Usually my favourite pieces are the ones that cover the body and have a hint of naughtiness (like our signature Kristel Turtle Neck Supsender Top or Bridget Body). But here that strategy wasn´t an option. I almost didn´t add our classic Kristel Suspender Top shape into the range as I felt it was too sexy. Then my mum came to the rescue and said, “You can´t be that conservative! Add some spice to the collection.” This top turned out to be one of the best-selling styles to boutiques. Mums know best, right?

I imagine the Julia Robe being worn with a smart white shirt and jeans to get a chic office look, Susan Motion with a cool T-shirt and A-line skirt, and the Inge Gown on top of your bikinis this Summer.

But for those who still believe that fishnet should be kept for kinky evenings in, you can follow the style tip from one of our most fashionable stockists – Faire Frou Frou, “Coordinating your handcuffs with your bra is always a fashion “Do.”

Either way, this Spring/Summer 2013 is all about fishnet and exploring new ways how to wear it.

Just one word

On the plane to Tokyo I tried to polish my

last minute Japanese, when landing I was fairly impressed with my knowledge. But what I understood very soon was that for a first time visitor learning to count to ten was quite useless. Next to Arigatou (thank you) I should have learnt just one word: the magical Kawaii.
Kawaii means cute and adorable. One can say that everything in Japan strives to be kawaii- starting from girls, clothes, planes, toys, to even a rabbit being Tokyo police mascot. At business meetings I was absolutely oblivious what was happening but when everyone started saying “kawaii” this was a sign the meeting was going well and our collections were getting positive reactions.

Not just for kids

A lot of inspiration for our collections has come from Manga – Japanese comics that people at all ages read. If you have a soft spot for Japanese comics then Akihabara district is a must-see! Huge anime stars banners, girls dressed as different characters giving out leaflets and countless stores selling videos, dolls, pillows, maybe even a bit of underwear…

My love affair with Manga started in high school, I was drawn to the powerful-yet-naive characters from the likes of Sailor Moon. When I was 16 I had a brief shock, seeing a hardcore porn version in the background at a party. I couldn´t look in the wide eyes of these innocent looking characters for almost a year. Luckily I got over the shock and who knows maybe that´s why I became a lingerie designer in the first place?

For everyone who is not that familiar with Manga, I recommend to read “Wrong about Japan” by Peter Carey. It´s great read about a father and son´s travels in Japan looking for the hidden puzzles and meanings withtin Manga and Anime.

Blinking lights and fashion hot spots

There are a lot of places to visit for shopping while you´re in Tokyo, but my favourite was Shibuya. At night.

If you´re interested in seeing the latest fashion trends head down to department store 109 where teenagers source all their on-season looks. This Autumn/Winter they seemed to be buying everything with cat ears. In Shibuya you´ll find crazy street-style at it´s best, what we see in famous “Fruits” magazines and books.

Having said that, don´t expect Tokyo street-style to be outrageous overall. I was quite surprised how much I actually had to look for craziness on the street as most people wear casual, comfortable and well-cut clothes in pastel colours. Nothing over the top there.

And the shock news

Media has painted a picture of Tokyo being insanely busy, all girls dressed as Harajukus, people owning robots instead of dogs, everyone wearing flu face masks etc. But I was positively surprised that it´s not the case. I think the biggest shock for me was how normal everything was. Maybe it´s the

globalized world we live in. Maybe it was because I had been preparing for this trip all my life. Or maybe because I had the most amazing hosts in the world!

Here I want to thank everyone for making my trip so unforgettable that I couldn´t control my emotions for almost 2 months to write a blog post.

A month before the shoot our photographer Kristel and I were having coffee in a cosy London cafe. I had just booked an icebreaker for our next shoot. “What if the theme is Titanic?” asked Kristel. I jumped on the idea – we

have a ship that was built around the same time as Titanic, it’s the Autumn/Winter collection, and I have been the biggest fan of the mystery as far as I can remember.When the movie launched i wanted to see the events of the sunk unfold, not necessarily the jolly dancing and raunchy car scene. Although don’t get me wrong, I loved every minute of Leo as well.

Little did we know that our chosen photoshoot week would be the coldest in five years in Estonia. We visited the iceabreaker 3 days before the shoot with -30 degrees celsius outside. The captain didn’t really want us to proceed with our plans and tried to convince us to change dates. But we stuck to our stubborn plan – we had already travelled to Tallinn, the models had been booked and deadlines were approaching.

So there we were standing with Kirki 5 minutes before our Leo & Kate (Siim & Tairica) were to come out to the freezing cold. The whole ship was covered with ice and a snow storm was approaching. We had to give them specific instructions where to step, what to grab and most importantly: not to look down.

But with brave models, warm dressing gowns, a bit of cognac and a great team, anything is possible. Our Kate & Leo survived.

We watch: Titanic.

Cheesy? Yes, we know but who hasn’t seen Titanic? The most romantic, yet the saddest movie ever made, based on a true story. Heartbreaking.
TV channels are playing it over and over again and some of us watch it every single time, eyes watering, wishing for that ‘happy ending’ that never arrives for Jack and Rose. Others watch it just once, and years later we still remember the movie almost as we saw it yesterday. Is it time to see it again? Maybe, maybe not, but soon

you will definitely see how much it inspired us for our new “Icebreaker” campaign shoot.

Haven’t you heard, military is back in fashion! And who is a better representative of the style than Janet Jackson? Our favorite Catwoman. A woman with power, amazing voice and a really cool music. “Rhythm Nation” is the song that´s making a comeback on our iPods this season. Even if the video is black and white, our mind still goes fantasizing about navy colour and gold details. So put on the song and make some dance moves!

We travel: Finland.

Have you ever thought of not going on holiday to a warm country by the blue ocean and palm trees? Let’s take a direction to far north and see what the cold has to offer us. Don’t know about you but we are craving for an extreme holiday and spending a weekend where everything is made of ice. Yes even the beds!
